With petrol and diesel cars set to be banned in 2035, electric vehicles are on the rise across UK roads. If you’re one of the drivers who have chosen to make the switch to eco-friendly EVs, you could benefit from getting an EV home charger installed.

There’s plenty of benefits of getting a home EV charger installed, and we’ll take you through these in this helpful guide. Continue reading to find out everything you need to know about home electric car chargers, including what they are, how they work and how you can get one fitted at your property.

What is EV Home Charging?

EV home charging is the process of charging your electric car from the comfort of your own home. You can choose to charge your vehicle using a regular domestic three-pin socket or get a home EV charger installed. The latter is a better, faster and more convenient option.

EV home charging is viewed as a much more convenient option than topping up the charge at stations. You can benefit from cheaper energy by charging your EV overnight on certain electricity tariffs, plus you don’t need to travel to get the charge you need.

How does EV home charging work?

If you have off-street parking available at your property, you can get a EV home charger installed. The charger connects to your mains electricity and charges up your vehicle with miles of range using a connector cable. Simply plug your car into the charger and wait for it to top up.

In the UK, most home EV chargers provide around 7kW of power, but you can get some that offer 11kW.

Can I get a home car charging point installed?

Can I get a Government grant for EV charging points?

Previously, grants for home chargers could be access through the Electric Vehicle Homecharge Scheme, also known as the EVHS or OZEV Grant. However, this initiative ended as of 31st March 2022. Installs cannot be claimed for after this date.

The grant is now only available to those who own or rent a flat or apartment. Up to £350 can be claimed.

Where should I install my EV charger?

In order to get an EV charger installed, you must have dedicated off-street parking. In most cases, a driveway or garage is ideal. These spots are usually the most convenient to park up and charge, plus it’s typically easy to connect the charger to the mains electricity.

Your qualified installer will be able to advise you of the best place to install your new home charging point.

What kind of EV charger should I choose?

You’ll need to decide whether you want a tethered or universal EV charge point, as well as what charging rate is suitable for your electric vehicle.

You may automatically want to choose the fastest charging rate, but you should weigh up a few factors first, like:

·      Maximum charging rate - Your EV will only charge at the charge point’s maximum rate, even if it can take a faster charge, and vice versa. For example, a charger car that fuels at 11kW will charge at a maximum of 7kW using a 7kW charger. Likewise, if the car is charged using a charger, it still won’t charge any faster than 11kW.

·      The power supply – Most UK homes have single-phase power, this enables a maximum 7kW charging rate. You can upgrade to three-phase power for a faster rate, but this will be more expensive. Think you’ll need a faster charging rate than 7kW? Then you’ll have to upgrade your home’s power supply before getting your new EV home charger installed takes place.

What’s a tethered charge point and how is it different to a socketed charge point?

A tethered charge point has a long cable and come equipped with either a Type 1 or Type 2 connector. Newer EVs tend to come with a Type 2 connector, but it’s recommended that you check before getting a tethered charge point fitted. Contrastingly, a socketed charge point doesn’t have a cable – it can be viewed as a dedicated charging point. They’re universal as they can power up any charger car using a fast charging cable.

How quickly does an electric car charge?

The length of time it takes for your EV to charge up will depend on the size of your battery, as well as the speed of the charging point you’re using. For example, with a 7kW charging station, it can take just under eight hours to completely charge up an EV with a 60kWh.

What’s the difference with a 3.6kW, 7kW and 22kW home car charger?

The kilowatt (kW) of a vehicle provides an indication of the power rating of a home charging point and the maximum power that can be drawn from the socket. A home EV charger that’s 7kW will charge up your electric vehicle three times faster than a three-pin plug.

For example, a Renault Zoe that’s fuelled using a 3.6kW charger will get a full battery in 7 hours, while a 7kW charger could charge it up in around 4 hours. Using a 22kW charger, the process could take just two hours.
